The second day of finals, and unfortunately it was more of the same with the wind! Lane 7 was the place to be, fortunately for Freo, we had managed to qualify a number of boats through the semis into the inside 3 lanes 7,6,5.
So starting off the day and our medal campaign the u17 womens 2x, after a false start and some serious nerves, the girls had a steady start, and at the 1km mark, the 2 doubles were sitting in 1st and 3rd. Through the 1500 the second double of Charlotte and Juliette pushed through and into second place, however the wind was just too much for them in the last 300m, and they couldn’t match the lift of the girls in lane 6. However it was Sina and Sophia (BRC) who had the best race, and finished it off with a win! So gold FRC/BRC and bronze to FRC
Next was the u19 Mens double of Oscar and Austin. After coming through the semis in first they were unlucky to be seeded in lane 5, but they attacked the race from the gun getting out to a boat length lead. they held the field off to the 1km mark, before being reeled back in by the inside lanes. Ultimately crossing the line in 3rd and taking home the bronze.
Lyla came down next as the 2 seat in the u19 women’s 4-. They had a cracking race, leading from go to whoa, and managing crushing win. Lyla was rowing with her pair partner Greta (srrc) and two Adelaide uni girls
In the U21 2x, Jacob and Aria (WARC) drew lane 6 after a ripping opening heat. They quickly settled into 2nd spot, and extended their lead over 3rd at each interval, taking out a silver medal. Highlight of the day was seeing a 68kg Jacob standing next to the winners of the bronze who were about a foot taller and 20kg heavier.
Charlotte Broad took the reigns of the U23 4- with 3 SRRC girls, they put down a great race, and managed to take over lane 7 from lane 5, and ended up in 3rd place taking home the bronze medal.
That was the end of the medals available for the day.
In the afternoon session with much of the racing delayed to the wind conditions making it un-rowable, we had Charlotte B win the rep of the U21 4x to progress them to the final. and finally in the last race of the day we had the 2 of our newest club members Madi and Lara, take on the rep in the women’s club double
Both Madi and Lara are u17’s who only started rowing in October as part of the TID program. In January these girls were ask to step into the nationals program to ensure we could get two u17 4x+ on the water at nationals. After racing in the quad yesterday they were tasked with the women’s club double, and while they didn’t qualify through to the semi’s, it is an amazing achievement, that after 5 months into the sport, these girls took on the worst wind conditions, and rowed like champions to finish 3rd in their final race.
With the delay in racing today we have had a slight change in program and as of 9.20pm no draw available
However check out
https://rowingmanager.com/regattas/5866/draw as we will have lots of finals in big boats as well as the school age singles to take us through to the end of the regatta.
